Food-Grade Aluminum & Tinplate Aerosol Cans — Lining & Compliance

When an aerosol product touches food, pharma, or anything that enters the human body, the can stops being “just a container.” The metal, the weld or seam, and above all the internal lining become part of the product safety chain. A beautiful print on the outside means nothing if the coating inside flakes, migrates, or reacts with the formulation.

At our factory, we manufacture food-grade aluminum and tinplate aerosol cans with lining systems and compliance documentation built for edible oils, cooking sprays, nasal/oral pharmaceuticals, food flavor mists, and other sensitive formulations. This post focuses on the two things buyers should never overlook: lining selection and regulatory compliance.

Food-Grade Aluminum & Tinplate Aerosol Cans — Lining & Compliance

Why the Lining Matters More Than the Metal

Both aluminum and tinplate are excellent aerosol substrates. But neither should be used bare for food contact:

  • Aluminum has a natural oxide film, yet food acids, salts, and high-polyphenol oils can still cause interaction.

  • Tinplate is steel with a tin layer; the steel substrate can corrode if the internal coating is wrong or damaged.

The lining is the functional barrier between your formula and the metal. Get it wrong and you risk off-flavors, discoloration, corrosion pinholes, coating delamination, or failed migration tests.

Our Food-Grade Lining Systems

Lining Type

Characteristics

Typical Uses

Food-Grade Epoxy

Strong oil/resin resistance, broad certification base

Cooking oil sprays, edible oil mists

Epoxy-Phenolic

Higher chemical resistance, good for acidic/buffered foods

Flavored oils, vinegar-based mists

PAM (Phenolic-Alkyd-Modified)

Excellent corrosion resistance, acid-tolerant

Polyphenol-rich olive oil, citrus/acid food sprays

BPA-NI Coatings

Bisphenol-A non-intentional formulations

EU, US, and markets with BPA restrictions

Pharma-Grade Coatings

Validated for nasal/oral exposure routes

Nasal sprays, throat sprays, oral care mists

Lining is selected by formula pH, solvent system, free fatty acid level, alcohol content, preservative package, filling temperature, and shelf-life target — not by guesswork.

Aluminum vs. Tinplate: Food-Grade View

  • Aluminum (monobloc): seamless, lightweight, premium feel, naturally opaque, excellent pressure consistency. Best for gourmet oils, pharma sprays, and high-end food mists.

  • Tinplate: cost-efficient at volume, rigid, stack-strong, superb print surface. Best for retail cooking sprays, mass-market food aerosols, and private-label programs.

Both can be food-grade — the difference is application economics and brand positioning, not safety.

Compliance We Support

We produce under ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 / HACCP systems and can support:

  • FDA 21 CFR food-contact requirements (USA)

  • EU 10/2011 plastic/lacquer migration framework (Europe)

  • LFGB food-contact compliance (Germany)

  • REACH substance restrictions

  • GMP-aligned documentation for pharmaceutical aerosols

  • BPA-NI declarations and heavy-metal screening (Pb, Cd, Hg, Cr⁶⁺)

  • Migration test reports, coating-thickness records, and COA per batch

  • UN/ADR support where the product is also classified as hazardous (e.g., pressurized food sprays with propellant)

Third-party lab reports are available on request, and we can run product-in-can aging tests before bulk production.

How We Qualify a Food Aerosol Project

  1. Customer sends formulation type, pH, solvent/alcohol content, propellant, and SDS.

  2. We propose can material (aluminum or tinplate), diameter, capacity, and valve opening.

  3. We select a food-grade lining and define coating weight/thickness.

  4. We produce plain + lined sample cans for filling trials.

  5. Customer fills, stores, and tests spray performance and taste/odor stability.

  6. Optional third-party migration and compatibility testing.

  7. Bulk production released only after sample approval.

Why Buyers Trust Us

  • Material flexibility — aluminum and tinplate from one factory

  • Lining engineering — we match coating to chemistry, not catalog

  • Compliance paperwork — FDA / EU 10/2011 / LFGB / BPA-NI support

  • Sample-first culture — no lining decision without filling validation

  • Integrated supply — cans, cones, domes, valves, actuators

  • Export experience — food and pharma aerosols shipped to Europe, MENA, Americas, and Asia

Bottom Line

Food-grade aerosol packaging is not “normal aerosol packaging with a nicer certificate.” It is a controlled system: metal + lining + valve + propellant + regulatory path. If your product goes near food or the human body, treat the lining as part of the recipe.
