Engine & Motor Oil Tin Cans | Custom Capacities & Seals

Engine oil and motor oil are among the most demanding liquid products to package. They're viscous, temperature-sensitive, prone to slow degradation of incompatible linings, and — perhaps most importantly — they represent a brand's reputation every time a customer pops the cap and pours. A leaking can, a swollen lid, or a compromised seal doesn't just mean a mess; it means a lost customer.

At our factory, we manufacture engine and motor oil tin cans with custom capacities and engineered sealing systems designed specifically for lubricants, engine oils, transmission fluids, hydraulic oils, and industrial greases. From compact 1-liter cans for motorcycle oil to heavy-duty 5-liter and 20-liter containers for commercial automotive use, we deliver packaging that protects your product from filling line to end-user.

Why Tinplate for Engine & Motor Oil?

Tinplate steel has been the industry standard for oil packaging for decades — and for good reason:

  • Stack strength — oil is heavy. Tinplate cans support high pallet stacking without buckling, unlike plastic alternatives that can deform under load.

  • Temperature resilience — engine oil is often stored in non-climate-controlled environments (garages, warehouses, shipping containers). Tinplate handles temperature swings from -10°C to 60°C without warping.

  • No permeation — unlike some plastics, tinplate provides a complete barrier. Your oil's additive package stays intact; nothing evaporates, nothing leaches.

  • Recyclability — steel is the most recycled material on earth, with established recovery streams in every major market.

  • Print quality — high-resolution lithographic printing directly on the can body gives your brand a premium shelf presence that plastic simply can't match.

Sealing Systems — Where Quality Lives

The single most common failure point in oil packaging is the seal. We engineer multiple sealing approaches depending on your filling method and distribution environment:

1. Lug Lid (Pry-Off)

The industry workhorse. A multi-tab lid crimped onto the can body with a seaming machine. Provides an airtight, leak-proof seal that survives rough handling. Ideal for 1L–5L engine oil cans. Requires a can opener or screwdriver to open — a feature, not a bug, for tamper evidence.

2. Screw Cap (Monotop)

A threaded monotop opening with a screw-on cap. Allows resealing after partial use — popular for motorcycle oils, 2-stroke oils, and smaller formats where consumers may use half a can and store the rest.

3. Spout Cap

Integrated pouring spout with controlled-flow design. Reduces spillage during oil changes, a major consumer pain point. Available in flexible plastic or rigid formats.

4. Tamper-Evident Seals

Shrink bands, break-rings, or induction seals to prove product integrity from factory to customer. Essential for export markets and retail distribution.

Internal Lining — Protecting the Formulation

Engine and motor oils contain additive packages — detergents, dispersants, anti-wear agents, viscosity index improvers — that can interact with bare metal over time. Our internal coating systems prevent:

  • Metal corrosion — tinplate is steel at its core; without lining, long-term oil contact can cause rust from the inside out

  • Coating delamination — our epoxy and epoxy-phenolic linings are tested for adhesion after prolonged oil contact

  • Product contamination — no flaking, no leaching, no taste/odor transfer

We routinely test lining compatibility with: conventional motor oil, synthetic blends, full synthetic, diesel engine oil, 2-stroke oil, gear oil, transmission fluid, and hydraulic oil.

Customization & OEM Capabilities

  • Custom capacities — non-standard volumes to differentiate your brand on shelf

  • Can shape — round (standard), square, rectangular, or oval profiles

  • Printing — full-body CMYK or Pantone-matched artwork, including API rating badges (SAE 5W-30, etc.), brand logos, usage instructions

  • Lid color matching — caps and lids in your brand colors

  • Handle options — integrated metal handle (larger sizes), plastic grip handle

  • Embossing/Debossing — volume markings, brand marks, recycling codes

  • MOQ — from 3,000 pcs for stock sizes; custom sizes from 10,000 pcs

  • Lead time — 20–30 days after artwork and sample confirmation
