Aerosol Can Buyers FAQ: MOQ, Coating, Pressure, Samples & Lead Time

If you're sourcing aerosol cans for the first time — or switching suppliers — the same questions always come up. Below are the answers our engineering and sales teams give buyers every week, organized around the five topics that matter most: MOQ, coating, pressure, samples, and lead time.

Aerosol Can Buyers FAQ: MOQ, Coating, Pressure, Samples & Lead Time

1. MOQ — What's the Minimum Order?

Short answer: It depends on the material and customization level.

Product Type

Typical MOQ

Stock/plain aluminum cans

5,000 pcs

Custom-printed aluminum (monobloc)

10,000–20,000 pcs

Stock tinplate aerosol cans

10,000 pcs

Custom-printed tinplate cans

20,000 pcs

Cones & domes (stock sizes)

20,000 pcs

Cones & domes (custom sizes)

50,000 pcs

Chemical tin cans (open-top)

3,000–5,000 pcs

Why the difference?
Tooling, printing plate setup, and coating-line minimum runs drive MOQ. Aluminum monobloc requires impact extrusion tooling per diameter; tinplate printing needs plate making per design. We keep MOQs as low as possible, but below certain volumes the unit cost rises sharply due to setup amortization.

Tip for new brands: Start with a stock-size plain can + sticker label to test the market, then move to printed cans once demand is proven.

2. Coating — How Do I Choose the Right Internal Lining?

The internal coating is the single most important decision for product safety and shelf life. Here's how we guide buyers:

Step 1 — Tell us your formulation:

  • Solvent-based (LPG, DME, propane, butane)?

  • Water-based (alcohol, glycol, saline)?

  • Oil-based (edible oil, lubricant, silicone)?

  • Acidic (pH < 5) or high-polyphenol?

  • Food-contact or pharmaceutical?

Step 2 — We match the lining:

Formulation Type

Recommended Coating

LPG/DME propellants, hydrocarbons

Epoxy-Phenolic

Water-based, saline, nasal sprays

PAM (Phenolic-Alkyd-Modified)

Edible oils, cooking sprays

Food-Grade Epoxy, PAM

Aggressive solvents (MEK, acetone)

Epoxy-Phenolic (heavy grade)

Food-contact with BPA restrictions

BPA-NI formulations

Pharma/oral/nasal

Pharma-grade certified coatings

Step 3 — Compatibility testing (optional but recommended):

We fill sample cans with your actual product and conduct accelerated aging (temperature cycling, pressure hold). If the lining holds, we proceed. If not, we adjust.

Common mistake: Buyers assume "epoxy" covers everything. It doesn't. A lining that works perfectly for hair spray can fail catastrophically with olive oil or MEK-based adhesive.

3. Pressure — What Ratings Do You Support?

Aerosol cans are pressure vessels. Getting this wrong is a safety hazard.

Standard pressure ratings:

Can Type

Burst Pressure

Working Pressure (typical)

Aluminum monobloc (22–53 mm)

18–25 bar

8–12 bar

Tinplate aerosol can

15–20 bar

6–10 bar

Chemical tin can (non-pressurized)

N/A

Vacuum or ambient only

Key variables we check with every buyer:

  • Propellant type and fill ratio

  • Filling temperature (affects vapor pressure)

  • Maximum expected storage temperature (container ships in summer = 60–70°C)

  • Valve pressure rating

Our process: We calculate the worst-case internal pressure at 60°C and ensure the can's burst rating has a minimum 2× safety factor. If your formulation pushes limits, we recommend either a thicker wall, a smaller diameter (stronger hoop strength), or a different material.

Don't guess. If you're unsure about your product's pressure profile, send us your formulation and filling parameters — we'll do the calculation.

4. Samples — How Do I Get Them?

Sample policy:

Sample Type

Cost

Lead Time

Stock plain cans (no print)

Free (you pay shipping)

3–5 days

Custom-printed samples

$50–200 (refundable against order)

10–15 days

Lined sample cans for compatibility test

Free with formulation disclosure

7–10 days

Full prototype with valve + actuator

$100–300 (refundable)

15–20 days

How to request samples effectively:

  1. Tell us the can diameter and capacity you need

  2. Share your product type (even a general description helps)

  3. Specify if you need food-grade or chemical-grade lining

  4. Confirm if you need matching valves/caps or just the empty can

We ship samples via DHL, FedEx, or UPS. For buyers in Asia, we can often hand-deliver during trade show visits.

5. Lead Time — When Will My Order Be Ready?

Standard lead times (after artwork/sample approval):

Stage

Duration

Tooling (new diameters only)

10–15 days

Coating application

3–5 days

Printing

5–7 days

Can body forming

3–5 days

Quality inspection & packing

2–3 days

Total (standard reorder)

25–35 days

Total (first order, custom print)

30–40 days

What can speed things up:

  • Using stock diameters and heights

  • Providing print-ready artwork (AI, PDF, CDR)

  • Approving pre-production samples promptly

  • Ordering during non-peak season (avoid Q3–Q4 rush)

What causes delays:

  • Artwork revisions (each round adds 3–5 days)

  • New coating qualification (adds 5–7 days)

  • Customs clearance for export (outside our control but we assist)

  • Force majeure (we'll communicate proactively)

Bonus: 3 Questions Buyers Forget to Ask (But Should)

Q: Can you match my existing can dimensions if I'm switching suppliers?

Yes — send us a sample can and we'll measure and replicate diameter, height, opening, and coating. We can also improve on weak points (e.g., upgrade lining if the old supplier had corrosion issues).

Q: Do you provide valves, actuators, and caps too?

Yes. We supply a complete aerosol package — cans, cones, domes, valves, actuators, and caps. One PO, one shipment, one quality standard.

Q: What if my first order is small but I plan to scale?

We support ramp-up programs. Start with a smaller MOQ on stock sizes, prove the market, then graduate to custom-printed runs. Many of our long-term clients started at 5,000 pcs and now order 500,000+ per month.

The Bottom Line

Sourcing aerosol cans isn't just about price per unit. It's about getting the material, lining, pressure rating, and timeline right for your specific product. The five topics above cover 90% of what goes wrong in aerosol packaging — and we'd rather answer them upfront than fix problems later.
